IMPORTANT CURRICULUM CHANGE IN JUNIOR YEAR CS and ACT MAJOR:

In a nutshell, effective Fall 2010, we are replacing the three four credit 300-level CS classes (CS314, CS301, and CS370) with four three credit CS (CS314, CS320, CS356, CS370) classes.

(So the total required 300-level credits will remain 12).

If you are or will be taking 300 level CS courses in Spring or Fall, read the following carefully.

NOTE: If you have completed your 300-level courses, or will not be taking them for more than one semester, these changes will have either no, or minimal effect on you.

Currently we require the following for the CS major:

Starting next fall (2010) these will be replaced by:

IMPLICATIONS FOR CS MAJORS:

----------------------------------------------

All CS majors who have not completed any 300 level CS classes by Fall 2010 will be required to take ALL four of the new courses for the CS major requirements.

Current students who have taken _one or two_ of the current four credit CS classes by fall 2010 will be given the option of taking the new courses according to these rules:

- If you have completed *one* 4 credit 300-level course by the start of fall 2010, you will be required to take three of the four new 3 credit courses (with course numbers different from the one that you already took); or

- If you have completed *two* 4 credit 300-level courses by the start of fall 2010, you will be required to take one of the new 3 credit 300-level courses (with a course number different from the two you already took).

- If you have already completed all three currently required 300-level courses, you may take one or more of the new courses (CS320 or CS356) but they will only count as upper division elective credit.

IMPLICATIONS FOR ACT MAJORS (Computing Technology Concentration):

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You will still be required to take CS314, but it will only be three credits, so you will need to make up the 1 credit reduction with an upper division (300+) elective credit.

CS370 will remain on the Advanced Technology Elective list, only for 3 instead of 4 credits.

CS356 will be added to the Advanced Technology Elective list.

IMPLICATIONS FOR ACT MAJORS (Computing and Human Factors Concentration):

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -----------

Instead of CS301 you be required to take CS320 (unless you have already taken, or are taking CS301 now), since it will be a prerequisite for CS440 (starting Fall 2011). Since it will only be three credits, you will need to make up the 1 credit reduction with an upper division (300+) elective credit.
