DISTANCE LEARNING (CSUN, formerly SURGE) PROGRAMS
IN
COMPUTER SCIENCE
AT
COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY
What is CSUN?
The Colorado State University Network for Learning (CSUN) is the delivery of CSU credit courses off-campus. In CS this means on-line courses. The class content and requirements for CSUN courses are the same as those for the on-campus versions. On-line course follow the same schedule as on-campus versions of the course.
The Computer Science Department offers courses via the Internet graduate level courses that will lead to a Master of Computer Science (course work only, no thesis or project).
CSUN is not, by itself, a degree program, but rather a way of taking courses. Anyone may enroll in any CSUN courses without being admitted to a degree program. If one plans to use CSUN courses towards a degree, one must be admitted to the degree program they plan to pursue. However, one can take several CSUN courses before being admitted to a degree program and count them in that program later. Contact the CSUN Office (970/491-5288) for a current CSUN bulletin containing courses being offered in the next semester.
Master of Computer Science:
Student wishing to pursue a Master of Computer Science degree through distance education must have an academic background in computer science appropriate to doing graduate study in computer science. The topics the Department expects graduate students to know are listed under the general MS Program description under the "Degree Programs" link.
There are several ways to demonstrate an appropriate background: a Bachelors degree with a major or official minor in computer science; an adequate score on the GRE computer science subject exam (in at least the 50th percentile range); or having taken a selection of CS courses equivalent to the CSU undergraduate core courses (five to eight specific courses, listed on the MCS Program description page).
Students apply to the distance MCS program through the same process as the on-campus program.

The MCS degree requires 39 semester hours of coursework numbered 400 or above.
