Getting Started: The Basic Submission Procedure

On your browser, bring up WebCT.

Once into the WebCT course home page,
click on Assignment Submissions in the left frame
(or the icon for this in the WebCT Assignments folder).

Then click on the link of the Assignment you wish to submit
and browse to find the file(s) you need to submit.

You may submit as many files as you wish.
They should have different filenames,
if they represent different parts of the assignment solution.

If an assignment consists of multiple files,
browse and find all of the files
and submit them together all at once.

Subsequent submissions replace files submitted earlier.

The Basic Submission Procedure Detailed:

You need to do the following:

  1. Click on SubmitAssignment in the left frame of the WebCT window.
(Or click the icon for this in the WebCT Assignments folder).

  2. Click on the name of the assignment for which you wish to submit file(s).

  3. In the lower part of the page under Submit Assignment,
look at the item Student files.
(This should have the notation None
if you have not yet submitted any files.)

    Click on the Upload button.

  4. Use the Browse button to find your assignment files.

  5. Click the Upload button once the file is found and selected.
(Note that this is not the same Upload button as in step 4.)

  6. Once the file has been uploaded, a box with the filename, date, and size appears.
There is a small checkbox to the left side of the file name
which you can check if you wish to delete it
(for instance, if you selected the wrong file by mistake).

  7. If you need to get additional files, click the Upload button again,
repeating steps 3-6 for each file.

  8. Once all files are listed (in a table with one file per row),
make absolutely sure that all the files
        are correctly named, spelled, etc.

  9. You should fill in your email address in order to
receive email verification (at the given email address)
        of your submission.
This assures you that your submission was accepted by WebCT.
Once you have filled in your email address,
it will be used for all later submissions.

(Instructor(s) receive email notification of every submission.)

Note: We also recommend that you verify your submissions
as described later in this document.

  10. Now, to submit these files, click the Submit assignment button
at the bottom of the page.

  11. This last step should submit the files, bringing up
    the Assignment Submission Confirmed page
that lists all the files that have been
currently submitted for this particular assignment.

Notice how many times you appear to have to click what appear to be the same buttons
(but act differently or are on different pages).
It may be a little confusing. But it does work.
And files of any type can be submitted from anywhere
that you have access to a browser.

  8. Note: there are two possible situations:

    1. If you deleted all your submitted files,
you do not need to click on the Submit assignment button.

    2. If you did not delete all your submitted files,
you must click on the Submit assignment button,
in order to resubmit the remaining files.

If you do not follow these instructions,
the deletions may not take effect,
or you may lose files you thought were submitted.

Submitting Additional Files:

There are several steps to adding files to your submission,
as you must first retrieve the files already submitted,
then browse and select the new, additional files to submit,
and finally submit all of these together.

The point is that each submission totally wipes out previously submitted files
as retrieving files virtually unsubmits them.
This is why you must first retrieve
            and then resubmit
    the originally submitted files
along with the new, additional files.

You need to do the following:

  1. Go to the Assignment Submissions page in your WebCT course.
Click on the name of the assignment.
Your previously submitted file(s) are shown.

  2. At the bottom of the page, click on the Retrieve assignment button.
    Click on OK.

  3. Click on the Return To assignment name link.

  4. In the lower part of the page under Submit Assignment,
look at the item Student files.
The previously submitted files are shown,
complete with name, date and size -- one per line.
To submit additional files, click on the Upload button.

  5. Use the Browse button to find the additional/next file to submit.

  6. Click the Upload button once your select the file,
        as in the regular submission.

Note: If the file you selected had been previously submitted,
WebCT tells you it already exists
and asks if you wish for it to be overwritten.
Click on Upload if you want it updated.
        and on Cancel otherwise.

Once the file has been uploaded, your list of files is shown.

  7. If you need to submit additional files, click the Upload button again,
repeating steps 4-6 for each file.

  8. Once all files are listed (in a table with one file per row),
    do make absolutely sure that
all the files are correctly named, spelled, etc.

  9. Again you should fill in your email address,
if it is not already there,
so that you receive email verification
(at that email address) of your submission.

(Instructor(s) receive email notification of all submissions.)

  10. Now, to submit these all these additional files,
click the Submit assignment button at the bottom of the page.
        Then click OK.

  11. This last step should submit the files and
bring up the Assignment Submission Confirmed page,
listing all the files that you have
currently submitted for this particular assignment.

Updating (Replacing) Already Submitted Files:

Suppose you already submitted your assignment files
but realize there was an error in your work.
Or suppose you came up with a better, more complete solution
    to your assignment.
How do you replace or update your already submitted files?

The main trick is to make sure
that you submit all your files together.
You must retrieve and replace those of the submitted files
        that you want to update
    while just retrieving the others.
Then you must submit all of them, old and new, together.
Remember that each submission totally wipes out previously submitted files
as retrieving files virtually unsubmits them.

You need to do the following:

  1. Go to the Submit assignment page in your WebCT course.

All the previously submitted files are shown,
complete with the name, date and size -- one per line.
Click on the Upload button to upload your updated files.

  5. Use the Browse button to find the new copy
of the file you wish to update,
to replace the previously submitted file.

Note: Both files should have the same filenames.
(Otherwise delete one and upload & submit the other
        as discussed above.)

  6. Click the Upload button once your select the file.
WebCT will notify you that this file exists
and ask you if you wish to overwrite it.
Click the Upload button again, if you do wish to overwrite it.
(Presumably you do, since you are trying to update a file!)

  7. You should now see the list of your files,
with the updated files showing a later date and time.
To update additional files, click the Upload button again,
repeating steps 4-6 for each file.

  8. Once all desired files are updated and listed
(in a table with one file per row),
make absolutely sure that all are correctly named, spelled, etc.

  9. Again you should fill in your email address,
if it is not already there,
so that you receive email verification
(at that email address) of your submission.

(Instructor(s) receive email notification of all submissions.)

  10. Now, to finalize the update of your files,
    click the Submit Assignment button
at the bottom of the page.

  11. This last step should submit the files and
bring up the Assignment Submission Confirmed page,
listing all the files you have currently submitted
            for this particular assignment.

Verifying What (Files) You Have Submitted:

You need to do the following:

  1. Go to the Assignment Submission page in your WebCT course.
Click on the name of the assignment.
Your previously submitted file(s) are shown.

  2. Verify that all file names are correct (spelling, upper/lower case, etc.)

  3. Click on one of the actual file names in the list of files.
A new window will open, showing you a list of your files
with radio buttons before each file name.

  4. Click on the radio button for any file you wish to view the contents of.
Then click the Download button at the top.

  5. You will then be asked what to do with the file,
to save the file or to open it.
The best option to choose is to open the file
            from its current location.
    Select this and click OK.

  6. You can then view the file to see if it is the correct file
and that it has the latest changes you have made.
Then you should exit the viewer used on the file.

  7. Repeat the above steps (4-6) to view the contents
of the rest of your files.

  8. Once you have verified all your files
and you are sure everything is correct,
    you may logout from WebCT.

  9. Note: You should never conclude
that you have completed an assignment
    unless you have verified
        that everything is correct.

  10. Warning: Since it is so easy to verify
that you have done everything correctly,
a very dim view is taken of any incorrectness
        in assignment submissions.
