January in New York City:

Local Information:
St. John's University is south of wonderful Tribeca area in downtown New York City.
Local attractions include the World Trade Center site (aka Ground Zero), 1 block south of St. John's;
the Winter Garden at the World Financial Center (a great view of Ground Zero);
the Tribeca and Meat-Packing District restaurants, featuring some of the best in NYC,
including the ultra-famous Nobu (reservations needed 2 months in advance);
Chinatown; and, all the way to the south, the Statue of Liberty.

Food:
For simple meals and fast food, try the area east of St. John's where there are plenty of options.
The Amish Market on West Broadway and Park Place is a great option.
For a closer option, try the St. John's cafeteria on the ground floor.
Or walk one block to the indoor restaurants of the World Financial Center and the area around the Embassy Suites Hotel.
For more interesting gastronomic experiences, try the restaurants north of St. John's on Greenwich St.
TIP: if you go to midtown (between 30th and 59th street), the rule of thumb for restaurants is to avoid the central avenues: there are great and affordable restaurants on 1st, 2nd, 9th, and 10th avenues, but not many great values in between these avenues. And try the ultimate NY food experience: if you see a packed restaurant or people waiting in line, that's the place to be (but only if the place does not belong to a know food franchise).
