Lab Assignment 1

The purpose of this assignment is for you to become familiar with the HP workstations

    that we are using for the duration of the workshop

Instructions

• Logging In:
  1. If you move the mouse just a little,
       you should see a login window appear on the screen
  2. Type in your assigned loginname in the appropriate box
  3. Type in your initial password
  4. If you make a mistake in typing, backspace to correct it
       or click on the StartOver button to redo it
  5. Then click on the OK button

• Exploring the Hewlett-Packard Common Desktop Environment (HP CDE):
  1. This is a Unix machine, meaning that
       the screen looks different than a PC or Mac running Windows
  2. Across the bottom of the screen is a bar with a number of tools,
       including a clock on the lefthand side
         and a trash can on the righthand side
  3. Notice the small EXIT button near the middle of the bar
       This is what you click on to log off the machine

• Opening a window:
  1. Click on the icon that looks like a file cabinet drawer
       This opens a file manager window for any files you save
  2. Now pull down the File menu in the top left corner
       and click on Open Terminal
  3. A new general-purpose window should appear on your screen
  4. You can now close the original File Manager window by
       pulling down the File menu again
         and clicking on Exit
       (Double-clicking the top left corner will also work)

• Seeing the contents of your home directory:
  1. With your login,
       each of you now has access to your own home directory
     To find the name and location of your home directory, type

         pwd 
     	

     
     and hit the carriage return inside this new general-purpose window
       you just opened
         (pwd is short for pathname of current working directory)
  2. Write down the pathname for your directory
  3. When the systems administration people set up your password,
       they also put some files in your directory
     To see what files are already there, type

         ls 
     	

     
     and hit the carriage return inside the same window
         (ls is short for list)
  4. Write down the names of these files

     
     Notice: Unix is case-sensitive
         It considers README different from Readme and readme

• Examining files in your home directory:
  1. Of course, files are no good to you unless you can read them
       and a file named README should probably be read
     So type

         more README 
     	

     
         followed by a carriage return
     and the contents of this file is given in the window,
       screenful by screenful
  2. Do the same for each of the files in your directory

• Creating new files:
  1. To create a new file, click on the editor icon in the HP CDE
         (the fourth icon from the left that looks like pencil and paper)
  2. This should bring up another window, an editing window
       Whatever you type in this window can be saved as a file
  3. Type in at least four lines into this empty window
       A short poem would do, e.g.

              Roses are red
              Violets are blue
              Sugar is sweet
              And so are you
     	

  4. To save this poem as a file,
       click on File at the top left of the editing window
         and roll down to click on Save As
     This should bring up a little window
       that asks you for a name for the new file
  5. Type in a name for your file, say Poem
       and click on Save
  6. Now close the editing window (File/Exit)

• Copying a file:
  1. First make sure your new file is really there
       by typing ls
  2. Next use the more command to see if the contents look correct
  3. Now let's make a copy of the file that we can modify
       just type

         cp Poem Poem2 
     	

     
     which creates the new file Poem2
       as a complete copy of Poem
         (cp is short for copy)
  4. Again, use ls and more to double check

• Modifying a file:
  1. Open the editing window again
  2. Click on File,
       and roll down and click on Open
     Another small window appears
       from which you can chose an existing file
  3. Type in the name of the new file
       created by the copy operation, say Poem2
         and click the Open button
     The copied file should appear in the editing window
  4. Make some changes to the file
       Add, delete, or rearrange some words
         (nonsense is perfectly okay)
  5. Now resave it
       Just click File,
       and roll down and click on Save
  6. Use more to check that the file was indeed altered

• Starting the Netscape browser:
  1. Simply type

         whereis netscape
     	

     to have the window print out all places in its files
       that it finds a command to start Netscape
  2. There should be two such addresses displayed in your window

         netscape: /usr/local/bin/netscape /usr/local/lib/netscape
     	

  3. Now to start the Netscape browser, type either one of these:

         /usr/local/bin/netscape  &
     	

     or

         /usr/local/lib/netscape  &
     	

     followed by an ampersand (&)

• Using the Netscape browser:
  1. Netscape usually starts on it own home page
  2. To see the home page for this workshop,
       pull down the menu under File
         in the top left corner of the Netscape window
  3. Click on Open Page
  4. Then type

         http://www.cs.colostate.edu/workshop/
     	

     in the space in the form
  5. Make sure that Navigator, not Composer is chosen
  6. Click on Open
       and the home page for the workshop should appear

• Finding more pages in Netscape:
  1. On the left hand side of the window (colored green),
       you should see a number of other links,
         including links to the home pages of your instructors and lab assistants
           Check them out!
  2. Click on Related Links to find still other web pages,
       especially those under Other Web Sites of Interest
  3. Spend a little time looking at different Web pages
       because you are going to learn how to make such pages
         in the next few days

• Examining the page source of other Web Pages:
  1. If you have extra time and want to look at how a web page is put together
       first bring up a Web page that interests you
  2. Next click and hold the View button
       at the top of the Netscape window
  3. Pull down to Source and click
       This should bring up a new window with the source code for that web page
         You'll learn more about this tomorrow

• Logging out:
  1. To complete your current login session,
       click on the small EXIT button
         in the HP CDE
