2006 - 2007 Past Events: Capture the Flag Orientation Capture the Flag is an annual security contest held among universities along the Front Range in which undergraduates have an opportunity to compete. The event is scheduled for a week from this Wednesday, April 25th. In preparation, this weeks meeting of the ACM student chapter will provide an overview of the event along with a chance for students to learn more about a number of new activities for undergraduates interested in network security. If you have an interest in security, or think you just might want to be part of this years contest, then come and learn more. Student/Faculty Trivia Contest Have you ever wanted to test your trivia skills against some of your professors? Or maybe you want to finally get the chance to prove that you really know more than they do. Then try your hand as a student contestant in the Student vs. Faculty Trivia Contest this Wednesday or just stop by to check out the fun. Also, elections will be held for next year's ACM officers. ACM members get the opportunity to cast their vote for their favorite candidates. So come see some trivia ballyhoo, cast a vote, and join us for free pizza!! Eduardo the Samurai Toaster Come see Robert DeMaria and Semnat Studios present "Eduardo the Samurai Toaster," a stunning 2D platformer due for release this year, and the world's first game to feature a Brazilian samurai toaster as its hero! Come find out what it is like for a startup company to successfully develope a real-world video game. As usual, pizza and soda will be provided! Machines within Machines - A Practical Look at Virtual Machines If you've ever wondered whether your personal computer must run only Windows, only Linux or only Mac OS, come see and hear how modern laptops can frequently run multiple operating systems at the same time. Ross Beveridge and Tim Renner will give a practical introduction to running virtual machines using two common tools, Parallels Desktop and VMware. In particular, Windows XP running under Mac OS X and Linux running under Windows XP will be demonstrated. There are many reasons to learn these tricks, including extending what you can do with your own computer and possibly learning to do some things more securely. Google Games Think you know everything about Google? Did you know that Google buys pizza for Computer Science students? Did you know that there are tons of games you can play using Google's search engine and other tools? Come join ACM club for pizza, soda, and the chance to impress your friends with you Googling skills. Scale and the Real World How is a trek through the Himalayas different from a walk to your local park? Is a remote control robot on Mars any different from the the one you buy at the hobby shop? Do you know how to write 200 lines of code, but don't know where to start for your next 200,000 line project? Interested in seeing a PowerPoint presentation with no text? If this interests you or you just want to have free pizza and see your fellow students outside of your regular classes, then join the ACM club at our next meeting. Scale and the Real World Scale will often affect your design and implementation in the real world. What are common scale problems in industry? How do we deal with scale? How can scale affect my career? Dave Matthews, long time HP employee and PhD student, will share his experiences with scale at HP and answer your questions about getting a job. Practical Security Ever wonder how to keep prying eyes from your personal information? Do you want to know how to keep would be intruders from accessing your network? Are you interested in donning a white cap in defense against the black hat populous? Please join us at this week's meeting to hear our very own Dan Massey present "Practical Security". Pizza will be provided! Graduate Study at the University of Alberta We are lucky to have a visiting professor from the University of Alberta, in Edmonton, Canada to speak to us this week. Come find out about Dr. Holte's fascinating research in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computer game playing (including poker). This is a buy-your-own-pizza event. See you there. IBM on campus IBM will be on campus on Wednesday 11/29 for an information session on their internship program for undergraduates. There is also an internship opportunity with IBM in Boulder, CO posted on CareerRAM. If you are interested in learning more about internships with this company then attend the employer session. "Meet the Employer" session on 11/29/06, 5:10 pm, Rm B101, Engineering. How, what, when and why of summer internships It's that time again, time to begin thinking about summer interships. The ACM club will be hosting Judy Brobst of the Carrer Center this Wednesday November 7th at 5pm in Engineering 120 Hammond Auditorium. Come join us for FREE PIZZA and to discuss what oppertunities are available for internships this summer. New Computer Science building The Computer Science Department is moving in 2008. Plans are being finalized for the construction of the new Computer Science building in the heart of campus. Come hear Dr. Whitley talk about the new building and give your input into its construction. Pizza will be provided. Halloween online video challenge The ACM club is hosting a Halloween online video contest. Links to videos that can be found online must be submitted by email to acm@cs.colostate.edu by Tuesday, October 25th at noon. Videos will be ranked by viewers at the meeting on Wednesday and the submitter of the best video will receive a $25 iTunes Gift Card provided by Sun Microsystems! So hurry and submit those funny Halloween videos! (Note that the ACM club advisors have asked the officers to ensure that videos shown at this event do not violate university guidelines of acceptable content.) Sanjay, Snacks, and Soda You ever wonder what Professor Rajopadhye does when he is not teaching or dreaming up work for his students. Then come to our meeting this Wednesday at 5pm and have some snacks and soda while Sanjay himself will be presenting. Why Polyhedra? In this interactive discussion, Professor Sanjay Rajopadhye will describe the main theme that has driven his research over a number of years. It consists of modeling programs as polyhedral objects, so that techniques from linear algebra can be used to model, analyze and transform high level programs to produce highly parallel implementations, be they fine grain parallel circuits or code that executes on general purpose parallel machines. Soda, Snacks, and Sudoku Come test your problem solving skills at the ACM Club's Sode, Snacks and Sudoku challenge. Compete against other teams to see who can complete their Sudoku puzzle first. The winning team will receive a goody bag of prizes. CS Jeopardy - sponsored by OCI Come join us for our annual CS Jeopardy event, sponsored by OCI. Teams of ACM members will compete for fun and prizes. Don't feel like competing? Come join the festivities with free food and drink. Participants must be ACM members. Not an ACM member yet? Sign up in the CS main office. Teams will consist of 3 players each and we have slots for 9 teams. Team sign-up will begin on Tuesday 9/26 at 9 AM. You must be an ACM member to play on a team. One team member can sign up an entire team. However, the person signing up the team must bring money to register all team members as ACM members or present proof of membership. Come learn about Undergraduate Research in the Computer Science department. Elaine Regelson and Dr. Bruce Draper will be speaking. Topics include: "What is Undergraduate Research?" "How Does One Get Involved?" and "What are the Potential Rewards?" As always, pizza and drinks will be provided. CS Department Picnic and Softball Game FUN: We have reserved softball fields for a CS faculty/grads vs. undergrads game. There will also be volleyball and pick up frizbee. Even if you don't play - it will be fun to watch and cheer for your side. GAME starts at 1:30 PM. FOOD: We are supplying hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and drinks. You are welcome to bring anything you like as well. The BBQ will fire up at Noon.
