2007 - 2008 Past Events: Lockheed Martin presents: No "Experience"? Not true! How to reframe your "college experience" as "work experience" to get the interview and win the job. So many students, when asked what work experience they have, answer with a shrug, "I don't really have any." But by looking at it differently, it turns out that they usually have a lot more than they ever realized or gave themselves credit for. If you don't think you have anything to offer, how will a hiring manager be able to make that leap? Automatic Face Recognition Ever wonder how much longer it will be before your laptop looks at you and greets you by name? For many years researchers have been improving algorithms for recognizing human faces, and if you have not encountered such a system yet, odds are that will change in the next couple of years. This week Ross Beveridge will give a brief overview of how face recognition works and Ward Fisher will demonstrate the technology using the system he has built for his Masters. Come join ACM this Wednesday for lots of Oreo activities including Oreo Bingo, Oreo Poker, and Oreo Construction! And of course, there will be plenty of Oreo eating as well! Sun Web 2.0 Internet Applications As the world wide web moves to Web 2.0 or "Web.next", a breed of applications is emerging that redefines the typical web application in terms of user experience, response time, and network efficiency. Well, it just so happens that the Network Security Group has both the tools and some target machines set up for you to learn on, safely and legally. Brendan Sheridan and Kyle Kelley are coming to show ACM some of the techniques used for cyber security competitions. Come find out about tools such as nmap and metasploit and watch as CSU students break into vulnerable Windows and Linux boxes. You can also find out about opportunities to get involved with the group to learn these tools to compete. As always, PIZZA will be provided! How private is your privacy? Revenue lost to computer security incidents have been rising over the years. Last year, companies lost almost $1 billion. Computer security companies have been fighting back with some encouraging results. Global sales will reach $10 billion in 2007. Security incidents have dropped significantly in recent months. Less reported, however, is that ordinary people lost close to $52 billion in 2006 because of sloppy handling of their private data by companies entrusted with the same. Unfortunately, these companies seem reluctant to take aggressive measures to protect this data. In fact, there is a growing trend towards collecting as much of this data as possible, and mine it to reap trillions of dollars in revenue. Join Dr. Indrajit Ray and the ACM this Wednesday to learn about the threats to your personal information, as well as what you can do to enhance your privacy. And of course, FREE pizza.
