2010 - 2011 Past Events: April 7, 2010 Topic: From UFS to GFS: The File Systems' Journey Into the Clouds Dr. Shrideep Pallickara will be presented his research on cloud computing, the newest form of computing that works entirely in "the cloud". He also provided a look at how the progression of file system management has been able to keep up with the demand for faster speed and bigger file usage. March 31, 2010 Topic: Exploring Google Wave Alex Norton presented a new product by Google called Google Wave. Despite reviews, this is not a chat room. It is a dynamic program unique that is capable of group tasks. Various aspects were discussed and experimented with. This product is currently in beta invite-only testing. March 24, 2010 Topic: Unseen Computing: Architecture and Programming John Worley noticed how today's computing has focused on user applications and not the programs that allow such applications to run, so he gave a brief history of computers and computing, and discuss the central role of computer architecture in programming, performance, and security. John also spoke on the Intel Itanium processor, a family of microprocessors that have assembly-level parallelism. March 10, 2010 Topic: Flash: Why not to use it and when you should Joseph Arnett presented a discussion on how Adobe Flash has become rampantly used on the Internet and demonstrated the useful aspects of Adobe Flash. March 3, 2010 Topic: Controlling Computers with your Mind Chuck Anderson presented his work on Artificial Intelligence and human-computer interfaces. He brought his "Brain Cap" that allowed disabled individuals to control electronics with a thought. February 24, 2010 Topic: Game Night A night to relieve stress with video and card games. February 17, 2010 Topic: Google's Open Source Phone: Android David Clutter, Paul Gagliardi, and Tom Stoneberg presented the open source programming aspect of the Android phone and how to set up the Android emulator with the Eclipse program. February 3, 2010 Topic: Preparing for Graduate School Various CS graduate students and faculty discussed about what being a graduate student is and how to become one.
