Topic: Game Night

Our final meeting of the semester will be a game night. Bring your favorite board/card game and take an hour or two off from the hectic pace of studying.

Topic: Reprap 3D Printing
Speaker: Jim Shepherd

Jim will be talking about the development of a Reprap 3d printer. Reprap is an open source / open hardware project to create a 3d printer which can print most of its own parts. The talk will focus specifically about the parts behind the printer, what one can expect when building one, and the customization options for these printers, such as the “frostruder” which can print frosting, and dual extruders. That will be followed by touching on the software to control the printer, which is also open source, and that Jim has personally helped improve. He will also bring his own Prusa – Reprap for demonstration purposes.

Topic: Evolutionary Neural Networks
Speaker: Michael Gussert

Gus will present a talk on his attempts to apply Evolutionary Neural Networks to the field of high energy particle astrophysics. He plans to discuss the specifics of Artificial Neural Networks as well as evolutionary algorithms. He also plans on talking briefly about the physics of cosmic radiation and how we go about detecting it. He will then discuss the current hurdles of the field and how ENNs will provide a possible solution.

With the ACM ICPC (International Collegiate Programming Contest) fast approaching this edition of ACM will focus on practicing for this event. If you are attending this year this meeting will be key; even if you are not competing this year you will be next year so show up to learn what the contest is all about so that you can be prepared to join!

Topic: Cryptography: From the Enigma to the Elliptic Curve

Speaker: Don Costello

Joint meeting with ACM, Upsilon Pi Epsilon

We are extremely pleased to announce we will have Don Costello - an ACM Distinguished Speaker joining us for this lecture on Cryptography. Don has taught undergraduate and graduate courses and has done work in research areas of Statistical Computing, Performance Modeling, Standards for Learning Objects and Managing Intellectual Property. He is a 40-year member of ACM and is a fellow of the British Computing Society. He has lectured all over the United States as well as in England, Ireland, Austria, Germany, India and Sri Lanka. He also held a four-year Carnegie Foundation grant to investigate how IP is managed in Universities around the World.

On a special note, Don helped found the ACM chapter here at CSU. Please make note of the date and time and plan to join us! Pizza and drinks will be served!

Topic: HP Speaker Scott D'Angelo on Finding Jobs

So you can program a real time ray-tracer to run on a commodore VIC-20, and you’ve proven P does indeed equal NP. Maybe you consider yourself to be the modern day Dijkstra, but how do you get yourself noticed and land a great job?

If you are interested in becoming a software developer, come to ACM club to hear Scott D’Angelo, a Software Design Engineer at Hewlett Packard, talk about the differences between school and industry, and how to find a great job right out of college.

Jason will show how to setup and use a linux virtual machine on Windows as a means of experimenting/using Linux on students' home machines without the hassles of dual booting.

In a joint meeting with the CIS club, the folks from Perficient will be in to give a presentation on “How to ace the interview.” They will be providing advice to help you land your dream job!

Join the ACM club this Saturday at Roland Moore park Shelter 2 for our annual Picnic. Come meet fellow students and faculty while enjoying free food and games! The event goes from 11 AM To 4 PM so stop by any time between then!

Hello and welcome back to school! This week at ACM we will be welcoming newcomers to ACM, and introducing the new officers, as we as presenting one of our tool-tip tutorials on how to use Eclipse.

Learn the basics of eclipse, some useful short cuts, and trouble-shooting techniques.

If this is your first semester in Computer Science this seminar will be incredibly useful to you, if it's not then you still might pick up some useful tips!
