Professor Beveridge does research on algorithms for Human Face Recognition. He in an expert in face recognition and is familiar with other biometrics. He will present a very general overview of the current technology for both face and gait (how one walks) recognition. Questions of a general and speculative nature are welcome, as well as speculations on how these technologies may mature and be used in the future.
There will be free food and drink at the meeting.

SIGN UP'S for Corporate Visit Day Started April 5 with Carol Calliham, she is located at USC on the 2nd floor.
You can sign up to visit either IBM, Agilent, or Hewlett-Packard.
Each company will be hosting between 20 and 30 students. Unfortunately there will not be any transportation provided, but if you can take some people with you please note that on the sign up.
There will be a $10 deposit required when you sign up, this money will be refunded to you when you arrive at the company.

The Colorado State University Student chapter of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) will be hosting Sun Microsystems' workshop which is titled "Technical Internship; How to Get them and the Importance to Employers." Either Shirley Lewis or Don Traub from Sun will be running this workshop. This will be an excellent opportunity for students to see what current employers are seeking in their prospective hires. Don't miss it.

Meeting: ACM Club hosts a Technical Workshop with Agilent Technologies

The Student ACM Club is hosting a Technical Workshop which will be run by Agilant Technology's Gordon Motley. The workshop will be very engaging as it will consist of an interview skit that will demonstrate good and bad behaviors and skills in interviewing. During the demonstrations they'll be involving students to evaluate how they are doing in the interview. We'll also be working through some interview skill best practices and what you can expect at an interview.
All Students are invited to come, listen, and ask questions. If you've ever been in an interview and wondered if you were doing all the right things this is your chance to find out. Don't miss out on such a great opportunity.

Meeting: ACM Club hosts a Computer Science Department Open Forum
Time: 6:30PM
Place: Rockwell Hall room 170
The Student ACM Club is hosting an open forum for CSU students on issues germane to the activities of the Computer Science (CS) Department. Professors Alexander and Beveridge will join Associate Chair Dale Grit in a panel of faculty, graduate students and undergraduates to pose and answer questions regarding CS curriculum, research and structure.
All Students are invited to come, listen, and ask questions. If you've ever wondered why the Department starts out teaching Java, or what graduate students do when not in classes, or why research is an important function of the CS department, please come. If you have concerns, suggests, or the like this is a fine venue to raise them.

Official AnnouncementThe Computer Science Department and The Association of Computing Machinery (ACM Club) are sponsoring a picnic Sunday October 12, 2003 at City Park! Here's what you need to know:
FUN: We have reserved softball fields for a CS faculty/grads vs. undergrads game. There will also be volleyball and pick up frizbee. Even if you don't play--it will be fun to watch and cheer for your side. GAME starts at 12 PM. Chuck Anderson is the captioning the faculty and grads side, we have not have an undergrad softball captain--but if you interested--just show up at City Park and talk to Chuck Anderson or Angelia Rudolph. Also equipment is provided!
FOOD: We are aware that many of you are vegetarians, so we (faculty and grads) are providing side dishes as well as garden burgers. Did you expect us to be anything less than dynamic?? Also -- Ross Beveridge applied for the position of Grill Master, and beat out all other applicants. However, if anyone wants to help out it, talk to Ross at the BBQ at the picnic. We are supplying hot dogs,chips and drinks. You are welcome to bring anything you like as well. The BBQ will fire up at 11AM.
FOUNDATIONS: This is a fantastic way to get to know your CS faculty,staff,and peers in a informal enviroment-- OUTSIDE THE USC!
FREE: Yup! This is free to you and your signifcant other, City Park is also family friendly, so if you have children, bring them too. We are also working with sponsorship outside the department for door prizes and such. We will keep yo posted when we have more information.

At this weeks meeting, Judy Brobst will discuss obtaining jobs in the CS field in light of the current state of the economy. As a CS student I hear many people say things like "You won't find a job when you finish" or "Are you sure you picked the right major". Come to this meeting and hear the latest news: which is on the whole pretty good.

2) the CNS College Student Council, and
3) the Department Undergraduate Committee.
