Official Announcement

Day:  April 26th, 2005
Time:  6:30 - 7:30 PM
Place:  Hammond Auditorium (Engineering 120, Near Pendulum)

What is a common factor between your cellphone, camera and garage door opener?

EMBEDDED SYSTEMS !! (And they are all more expensive than they need to be!)

ACM Club has invited Dr. Sanjay Rajopadhye to give a talk about the trends in embedded systems and reconfigurable computing, and the implications of Moore's Law on such systems. (If you don't know Moore's Law, then you NEED to come to this meeting.) He will also discuss some of the ongoing research and how to transfer the results of an ongoing NSF project into YOUR curriculum!  What do you think a course on embedded systems should teach?

So if you have an opinion; don't have an opinion; get curious about small things, fast things, shiny things, or blue things, THEN COME ON DOWN!!!  Come with questions to probe around for anything that may interest you or anything you have ever wondered about.

We can't wait to see you there!

Perl: A Master of Scripting

Official Announcement

Day:  April 12th, 2005
Time:  6:30 - 7:30 PM
Place:  Hammond Auditorium (Engineering 120, Near Pendulum)

Long, long ago...in a far away place... a scripting language was born that had nearly limitless possibilities and it was dubbed... PERL!

Perl, which stands for Practical Extraction and Report Language, has many uses in today's web interface and also in scripting tests, or many other uses.  But don't just take my word for it!  Come and listen to our own perl expert, Onyx, on the deeper questions that plague my dreams:

- Perl: what is it?
- What can it be used for (and why do I care)
- Questions that people have asked before (FAQ)
- The language itself and why some love it and others are driven insane!
- Regular Expressions (and how they can turn the declaration of independance into "Three Blind Mice")

Don't miss out on the fun (and insanity) that is PERL.  Who knows?  It may just be the thing to make your life easier.

NOW YOU CAN!!

Come join us and we will show you how you can enable a dual boot machine that allows you the power of Windows and Linux all on the same hard drive.

Picking an OS

Meeting Minutes Official Announcement

Day:  March 29th, 2005
Time:  6:30 - 7:30 PM
Place:  Hammond Auditorium (Engineering 120, Near Pendulum)

It may have already happened.  You may have been consumed by what Dell has put on your computer thinking that is the only operating system in existence.  But I just have to say...HOLD THE PHONE!!!  There are many other operating systems out there to choose from that you may like better.  Maybe you are looking for something a little more customizable, something a little more 3-D, or maybe something a little bit more...Microsoft.

Now there are some people that may not know what an operating system is.  I just hope they are not in CS.  But if you are one of these people, then you definately need to join us and get up to date!  Three different members of the CS department will present a comparative overview of three of the most common environments for CSU's CS program: Linux, Windows, and Mac OS.  There will be one speaker per system.  The presentation will cover:

* Different types of use (code development, communication, e-mail, browsing)
* How each fits into the CS community
* Security
* And any questions that you have!

So come joins us and don't be left with just what someone gave you.  Find the best environment that fits with your mind!

Time:  6:30 - 7:30 PM
Place:  Hammond Auditorium (Engineering 120, Near Pendulum)
Speaker:  Justin Moninger and Robert Kausch

A couple years out of school and already back for a reunion.  Justin Moninger and Robert Kausch are both graduates from CSU (2003 and 2002 respectively) and are now back to talk with the CS students about any questions they may have on defense contracting, the commercial world, how to be successful, and how you too can graduate successfully even if you went to more than your fair share of parties. (Gotta go party for those who don't, right?!) These guys have been fairly successful since they hit the exterior of the academic world, and they can help give you tips on what is needed taking your first few steps out of college.  The one thing they ask, is that you BRING QUESTIONS!  They are here to answer your questions, and want this to be less of a presentation and more of a dialogue.

So please, write your questions down on a napkin, etch them into glass, or chizle them into stone for all we care. (Some of you more advanced folks can put them into your PDA).  And as always, we will be serving food and drinks!  Come and get ready for your future!

This talk will focus on two key ideas:

Is software engineering stuff useful and making a difference in the real world?

and...

What do you need to know as software engineers to survive (it is a jungle out there) in the real world?

Please come with an open mind, noting he will not answer these questions definitely; but instead provide insight from his experiences as a software programmer.  And as always, food and drinks for everyone!

Securities Lecture

Official Announcement

Day:  November 10th, 2004
Time:  6:00 - 7:30 PM
Place:  Clark A 203
Speaker:  Daniel Massey

Daniel Massey recently joined the Computer Science Department at CSU and is an expert in internet security.  This talk is aimed at a general audience and will address practical concerns that arise for all of us that use the internet.

Talk Abstract:

The Internet has developed from a small research project into a very powerful system for communication; email is now a common form of personal communication, private information ranging from course grades to financial data is available online, commercial products and government services can be obtained over the web, and so forth.  Furthermore, power grids, air traffic control systems, and other networks are being connected to the Internet.  The net result is that the Internet has grown to such an extent that it now plays a role in many people's daily lives.  However, it is unclear whether improvements in network security have kept pace with this growth.  To a large extent, network security often relies on smart decisions by end users.  This worked well for a small community of researchers where the security concerns were minimal at best, but it raises serious concerns for today's global Internet.  For example, security protocols may assume that people will check the authenticity of new web certificates and will not provide confidential data unless the certificate is valid.  Perhaps more importantly, systems frequently assume people will protect their home PCs by applying patches and checking security features.  These assumptions can be deadly for today's Internet.  In this talk, we will examine some of the problems and assumptions behind the "state of the art" Internet security, examine what still needs to be done, and consider what you can do to protect both your private data and the Internet in general.

Get Them Bugs! A Debugging Workshop

Meeting Minutes
Official Announcement

Day:  November 3rd, 2004
Time:  6:00 - 7:30 PM
Place:  Clark A 203

It's getting late.  It's 10:30 p.m. and you still don't have your programming assignment done for class and it is due at midnight.  The program works, but it has BUGS EVERYWHERE!!!  How are you to find them all in time?  Where are things going wrong?!

Don't fret just yet, the ACM club as the answers you have been looking for.  We will be holding a meeting to discuss a couple different debuggers, such as GDB, that are commonly used to find bugs in code.  They are very powerful and time saving tools used by students and industry alike.  They also come HIGHLY recommended by the upper class in CS.

So please, come and view this informational meeting so you may save yourself future time, hassles, and most importantly, HAIR. (Stress has been found to be one of the leading causes in balding men) Then again, another way to solve that problem is just to write perfect code; but not even Microsoft can do that. :-)

We are ACM, and we are here for you.  (http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~acm)
