Extra Credit Assignments
These extra credit assignments are optional. You may do them at any
time and turn them in for extra credit. No credit will be given for
assignments turned in after class on May 1st.
Extra Credit Assignment E1
Download and install one of the X-servers available for MS Windows
that are listed at the X-Server site linked to at the end of our MS Windows Tools links. You do
not have to purchase one. Just download one of the evaluation
versions. Take notes about the URLs and the
procedure you used to download and install it and get it running.
Also note the difficulties you ran in to.
Make a picture of the X-server running some X-window application, such
as gv viewing a postscript file, on a
CS computer but displaying on your MS Windows PC. Do this with a
screen capture program. Here is a link to a freeware screen capture
program called WinGrab.
Turn in your typed notes in some readable form (text, Word, or
LaTeX). Turn in a printout of your screen capture.
Extra Credit Assignment E2
Write a three page, single-spaced paper on your experience in CS153.
Include answers to the following questions. How much did you know
about computers, programming, and Java before you took the class?
Which aspects of Java programming have been the most difficult for you
to understand so far? Can you think of alternative ways of teaching Java
concepts that would help you learn them faster, or in more depth?
What Java topics beyond what you have studied so far do you most want
to learn more about?
Use some text formatter, like Latex or Word, to type your report.
Turn in a printed copy. Don't forget to use a spell checker.

Grading
Each successfully completed extra credit assignment will be worth
about half of a required assignment, so approximately 2 percent of
your final grade.
