Leading a Discussion
Since we all have read the papers being discussed in class, I suggest that the presenter follow these guidelines:
- Describe the main topic of the paper.
- Say how it relates to other papers we have discussed, or to material from CS510, or to the graphics field itself as you know it.
- Describe the authors' backgrounds and anything else you know about them.
- Give the class the web addresses you have found that are relevant
to this paper. If you can, e-mail them to me well in advance of the
paper discussion so I can add them to the CS612 web page.
- Very briefly overview the organization of the paper.
- Discuss in detail what you consider the most significant strong
and weak points of:
- the paper in its organization and content,
- the methods presented in the paper,
- the results
- If the methods are very mathematical, try to give us an overview
of the technique. Refer to other papers you found on the web or
through interlibrary loan.
- While presenting your views, ask a number of times for input from
the group.
- Give us your prediction of where this work might lead. For
example, the authors' web sites might describe more recent work that
will indicate the direction the authors are taking their work.
- Have your own notes with you to follow while leading the discussion.
Do not simply read from the paper. Even if you are summarizing, don't
summarize the paragraphs in order. Give us a top-down view.
Any other suggestions?
