God Arguments

Argument Two Goal: show God does not exist 

(1) An omniscient being would know how to create a world with no evil (def.) 
(2) An omnipotent being would be able to create a world with no evil (def.) 
(3) An omnibenevolent being would want to create a world with no evil (def.) 
(4) If there is an omniscient, omnipotent, omnibenevolent being, then there is no evil in the world it creates
      (1,2,3,MP) 
(5) If God exists, God is such a being (definition) 
(6) If God exists, then there is no evil in the world (4,5,MP) 
(7) Assume, looking for a contradiction, that God exists 
(8) There is evil in the world (premise) 
(9) There is no evil in the world (6,7,MP) 
(10) God does not exist (7,8,9,indirect proof) 

Argument Three Goal: show God exists 

(1) God is that than which nothing greater can be conceived (definition) 
(2) Assume, looking for a contradiction, that God does not exist 
(3) For any objects  and , if  and  agree in all properties except that  exists and  does not,
      then  is greater than  (premise) 
(4) It is possible to conceive of a being with all of God's properties and existence as an additional property -
      call this being Supergod (premise) 
(5) Supergod is greater than God (2,3,4,MP) 
(6) It is possible to conceive of a being greater than God (4,5,MP) 
(7) It is not possible to conceive of a being greater than God (1) 
(8) God exists (2,6,7,indirect proof)
