Labs

Overview

Lab class sessions are held in twice a week in classroom CS110. Each student is responsible for fifteen lab sessions consisting of 1 initial session and fourteen Lab Units, one each week. Each Lab Unit consists of a set of trainings, a pre-test taken on Tuesday, and a post-test taken on Thursday and is worth up to 20 points. All of the Lab Unit assignments are in MyITLab simulator software provided by the publisher of the textbook.

Trainings

Each lab unit has a set of trainings that teach the student the fundamentals necessary to take the pre-test and the post-test. These trainings may be taken as many times as you want (only the highest score will be kept). The trainings may be done either in the CS110 Lab classroom or at home on your own PC (Sorry, no Mac support). The trainings can be done before taking the pre-test, but MUST be taken by 11:59 on Wednesday before the post-test.

Each training is pass/fail (85%), and is worth 4 points of the Lab Unit.

Pre-test

The pre-test exam can be worth up to 16 points of your Lab Unit grade, but the score is only valid if you score 85% or higher on the pre-test. If you do not score 85% or higher, the recorded score is a zero. Only the first occurrence of the pretest counts towards the pre-test score, even if the software allows you to retake it. The pre-test exam MUST be taken in the CS110 Lab classroom during your assigned recitation time-slot on Tuesday. Any exceptions require an excused absence (illness or emergency) with associated documentation.

Post-test

The post-test exam can be worth up to 16 points of your Lab Unit grade. Only the first occurrence of the post-test counts towards the post-test score, even if the software allows you to retake it. The post-test exam MUST be taken in the CS110 Lab classroom during your assigned recitation time-slot on Thursday. Any exceptions require an excused absence (illness or emergency) with associated documentation.

Scoring for lab unit

As mentioned, the score for the pre-test only counts if you receive an 85% or higher on the test. If you do not receive an 85% on the pre-test, or you want to improve the score you received on the pre-test, you MUST take the post-test. We will take the max of the two test scores times the points available for the testing portion (16 points) + the pass/fail score of the trainings (either 0 or 4) to compute the number of points you will receive for the lab unit.

Only 14 of the 15 lab units will count towards a student's grade, the worst score will be tossed.

Lab 1

In addition to the fourteen Lab Units, students will receive credit for 1 lab for attending the first lab session during their scheduled Thursday recitation in the first weeek . The first lab will consist of enrolling in the MyITLab software with your specific codes, reviewing the syllabus, and taking an assessment in RamCT to record these activities. BE SURE to bring your codes to the Thursday lab during the first week. Do NOT register ahead of time.

Basic lab Rules

Students MUST bring their Colorado State Student ID for admittance to the Lab. This ID will be given to the lab operator upon admittance and checked against the registered student list for that lab class session. If the student does not bring his or her Student ID, he or she will not be allowed to take the Lab Test. No other ID will be accepted.

No books, notebooks, cell phones, IPods, pagers, or carrier pigeons will be allowed at the lab station at any time during class recitation hours, or when a student is taking an on-line quiz. GTAs and Lab operators will be available MWF from 9am to 6pm in the CS110 Lab classroom for tutoring, assistance with trainings, make-up exams, quiz proctoring, etc.
