Welcome! As the syllabus describes, 10 percent of your grade in CS370 comes from your Class Poster / Report Project. For this project, you will divvy up into groups of either 3 or 4 people. Each group will be responsible for submitting a proposal over an operating systems related topic pertaining to the computing world of 2020 - and then creating both a report and a poster over that topic. Each group will have peer reviews which will influence your grades.
The class project is intended to not be a recital of previous facts - although your views should be demonstratably informed. Show that given the last 5 years and the advances, where will the next 6 years take us.
These topics include (but are not limited to):
Each group will be responsible for submitting a 1-2 pages (11 pt. Times
Roman with 1 inch margins) proposal for their
topic. The topic should be chosen such that the group can write at least
5 pages in IEEE format which can be found
here.
The proposal should indicate enough details of the topic so the scope is
well defined. It should also include specific responsibilities for each
of the team members. It should also include 8-10 citations over the topic.
Questions to answer -
As mentioned above, the project report shall be 5-7 pages in length using IEEE format It shall include 10-15 citiations of sources. The report should be coherent, succinct, and easily readable. The report should include the following:
Remember, your purpose is not to defend a particular device or operating system. Instead, take the general concepts we have covered in class and expand them into your topic.
Citations have a specific purpose:
Remember to number your references and list them in your bibliography in the order that you referenced it. If an article is in your bibliography it must cited in the main text. Citing at the right location indicates what your source is for a particular piece of information, and also demonstrates that you have read the article. Make sure that you cite all your references including Wikipedia and Online lecture notes that you may have perused. References that are not cited should not be in your bibliography.
Poster Session - Friday, April 25th at 3:00pm.
There is also a poster component to this assignment. You should make a 4 feet x 3 feet poster summarizing the key components of your term paper. The poster session will be held in the CS building. The poster is worth 20 points. Each group must have 1 poster for this session: if a poster is not there for this session, you will lose the 20 points assigned for this deliverable.
A good resource for designing technical posters is available here. Your poster should not be set of slides arranged on the poster nor should it be a slightly bigger printout of your term paper. Your poster should be 4 feet x 3 feet and readable by someone 6 feet away. You have complete freedom to render this poster using any software that you prefer. Convey the most important concepts and key insights that you have derived from your work on this term paper. List a maximum of 5 references in the poster.
You can print your poster at the CNS Computer Lab for free.
I will be announcing this poster session within the department. You can expect to see faculty, graduate students, and other undergraduate students at this session. Be prepared with a 1- minute description about what your poster is about. Team members must take turns describing the work to the session attendees.
To get a feel for what technical posters look like, please see posters on the 3rd and 4th floors of the CS building. Finally, all posters MUST include names of all members of the team as authors.
Each member of the group is required to submit a peer review of the other individuals in the group. This review should list each of the members of the group and assign them a grade (A,B,C,D,F) that signifies their effort on the project.
Group definition and topic - email to instructor. Class Project Proposal - posted to the group discussion board in pdf format. Class Project Report - posted to the group dicussion board in pdf format. Class Project Poster - brought to poster session. Peer review - submitted to the appropriate RamCT portal.
