Discussion Topics 3: Online Resources to Bring Shading and Illumination to Life

Discussion Period from 10/11 trough 10/17.

Overview - Review A Bit More Mechanics

Please use the newly created October Discussion Groups for this assignment.

Within each discussion group, please create a new forum for this discussion topic (if the GTA has not already done so).

Activity.

In the past week and a half we have discussed 3 primary ways in which objects are illuminated in renderings of 3-D scenes. These 3 are, ambient illumination, diffuse illumination, and specular illumination (reflection). Mastering and intuition for how objects appear as a consequence of these 3 forms of illumination and their combinations is a key component of understanding computer graphics. Moreover, this is a ubiquitous topic covered in essentially any material introducing 3-D graphics. Therefore, this week's discussion topic focuses on each discussion group member finding a unique online resource, and by unique we mean to the discussion group, not the class is a whole necessarily. These resources will be posted to the discussion group and discussed within the discussion group. The kinds of resources it is hoped will be found include interactive websites that allow one to manipulate the parameters behind the illumination model and instantly see the result. It would be also wonderful to find sites that offer particularly well illustrated introductions to these different forms of illumination. Keep in mind when looking for resources that discuss these 3 forms of illumination that illumination models and shading are tightly coupled and you are most likely to find good sites that address both at the same time.
