A large amount of spam does not come through our department mail server, it comes from the university. Odd as it may seem, the *default* for CSU is to not filter incoming mail. No really, it's true. If your CSU Firstname.Lastname@colostate.edu address does not point at an ACNS machine, ACNS will accept all mail for you and then pass it on unfiltered. One way to filter it is to run it through an ACNS machine. Read the next bit carefully. If you do *not* use your lamar/holly/simla account for email (that is, you do not, for example, choose lamar/holly/simla from webmail.colostate.edu), follow the directions below to have your Firstname.Lastname@colostate.edu mail spam filtered by ACNS before it arrives in math or stat: 1) Go to: https://eagle.colostate.edu/spam Log on with your EID username and password Choose the fourth option: "Check my Mail quota" At the top of the page, it will read: Quotas for "username" on "machinename.colostate.edu" [Note: when you click on "check my Mail quota", the resulting page is a popup, which may be blocked if your browser's popup blocker is on. Temporarily turning it off or allowing popups from eagle.colostate.edu should do it.] Keep in mind both "username" and "machinename.colostate.edu". We'll need both for part 2. Go back and choose the third option: "Forward My Mail to Another Server" Enter your math or stat email address Click Return to ACNS Email options Close your browser Now all mail that arrives at lamar/holly/simla will be forwarded to your math or stat account. 2) Go to: http://eid.colostate.edu Click on "Change Email address" Log in with your EID username and password One of the options will already be selected and you will be presented with the email address where your Firstname.Lastname@colostate.edu mail ends up. Recall part 1 when we were shown this line: Quotas for "username" on "machinename.colostate.edu" Change your email address to username@machinename.colostate.edu. username should be your eid login and machinename is as was listed above. Click on "Change Email." Close the browser. This may take a day to start working. You'll know it is working when you recieve spamcanner reports from ACNS every morning. Recap ----- If your First.Last@colostate.edu, points directly to your math or stat account, you will get a lot of unfiltered spam from ACNS. The idea is to send that mail to lamar/holly/simla and then to your math or stat account. In that way, mail coming from ACNS will be filtered. In part 1, we set up the forwarding from lamar/holly/simla to math or stat. In part 2, we change the First.Last@colostate.edu address to point to your lamar/holly/simla account. old mail path: First.Last@colostate.edu -> no filtering -> math or stat account new mail path: First.Last@colostate.edu -> lamar/holly/simla account -> spam filtered -> math or stat account
