Course Description

This class provides the knowledge and skills necessary to use a personal computer in the college environment and in a professional career, focusing on those skills needed to perform and document research. The format of the class includes Lectures and Labs.

Class Activities / Makeup policies

• Lectures
  • Lectures will be held in person at Yates 104, check the schedule for what dates lectures are
  • Lectures will be recorded and can be found on the Echo360 Tab of canvas

• Lecture Quizzes
  • Students are responsible for 6 Lecture Quizzes.
  • Lecture Quizzes are over the material presented in the lectures and homework assignments.
  • Lecture Quizzes are open book assigned as homework.
  • A Lecture Quiz may be taken up to 5 times, only the best score will be kept.
  • No Lecture Quizzes will be accepted after the late deadline.
  • Students with an excused absence will be allowed to make up a Lecture Quiz without penalty.
• Lab Assignments
  • Each Lab Assignment consists of a Lab Training and an Exercise.
  • Lab Training and Lab Exercises are graded separately.
  • These Lab Assignments cover specific functionality with one of the Microsoft Office tools.
  • There is no limit to the number of times a Lab Training may be taken before the due date, only the highest score will count.
  • Lab Trainings may be completed beforehand outside of the lab.
  • A Lab Exercise may only be taken once during a lab session.
  • Lab Exercises are closed book.
  • Lab Exercises must be done in the CS110 lab.
  • Students with excused absences will be allowed to make up a Lab Assignment without penalty.
  • There is a hint board on each end of the lab with hints about issues to do with the tools and the day's assignment. Be sure to check them out before doing that day's assignment.

• Class Projects
  • There are several Class Projects that will be assigned throughout the semester.
  • Descriptions for each Class Project are delivered as a part of the assignment.
  • Each project will have a late period subject to a late penalty deduction of 20%.
  • Students with excused absences will be allowed to make up the Class Project without penalty.
  • The lowest project score will be dropped.

• Lecture Exams
  • Given 3 times during the semester. See the schedule tab for the assigned Lecture Exam times.
  • Cover the previous 4-5 weeks lectures.
  • Canvas based and must be taken in the CS110 Lab building during the lab time.
  • Available for from 8am to 6pm on the day of the exam

• Lab Exams
  • Given 6 times during the semester. See the schedule tab for dates.
  • Done in SIMnet.

• Final Exam
  • There will be NO final exam given in this course.

• Extra credit
  • Extra credit will not be offered in this course.
• All activities in this class will be done individually. Software is run to detect collaboration on assignments, any cases identified will be reported to Academic Integrity.

  Specific objectives and activities include:

  • An understanding of basic computer concepts such as:
    • Computer hardware and software.
    • Security and privacy.
    • Tools that use the Internet and the World-Wide-Web.
    • Searching for and collecting pertinent information.
  • Understanding how to manage and keep information secure.
  • Preparation of professional documents.
  • Creation of well-designed presentations.
  • Manipulating, analyzing and plotting data.
  • Projecting information onto the web.

  Expectations:

  The typical expectation for a college course at CSU is that students will work at least 2-3 hours outside of class per class credit hour. A 4 credit class such as this one may require you to work more than 8 hours per week in addition to your classroom activities. A key objective of this course is that, by the end of the semester, every student will have the ability to collect data in his/her specific area of study, write a research paper, put together a presentation on that paper, and publish the information on the web in a professional manner. The information provided during the lectures provides an overview of the specific topics while the labs provide hands-on experience with the tools.
