UX vs UI?

Professional websites and apps are developed with thoughtful design that considers the impact on the experience on the user.

In some respects, design is the very artsy side of web development. You want the user to feel certain things when they use your app.

Are they frustrated because the app is confusing?
Or are they relieved because they've had a long day and this app makes their life easier?
Who is using your app and under what circumstances?
How do you design your app to meet their workflow? Do you know what their workflow looks like?
When designing a web page or application you must always start with the users workflow and then work backwards into what functionality and where it needs to be.

Sometimes it's okay to follow the trends

Notice the navbars of these sites, they are all plaved on top and centered.

Microsoft and Tesla opt for background-less navbars, while Apple's has a background it's very subtle on changes with hover.

Notice where the sign option is on the Microsoft and Tesla sites.

Notice that each site has a lot of photos and space. Microsoft and Apple both have large photo banners.

Notice that on Microsoft and Tesla important elements that go together are grouped.

In addition note the rule of 7's, that is that most people can only hold 7 things in their short term memory at once. In Micrsoft and Tesla's pages you can see that the list of important elements does not exceed 7. In Apple's page it is exceeded to a whopping amount of 8.
