Definition: Client/Server

    ┌────────┐ ┌──────┐
    │ laptop │··············│ eBay │
    └────────┘ Internet └──────┘

End systems may be classified as clients, servers, both, or neither.

Client vs. server depends on what programs the end system is running. A given host may be both. Most hosts are DNS clients.
