A Metamodeling
Approach to Specifying Design Patterns
Software applications have dramatically grown in size and complexity. A
major goal in software development is to produce quality products with
less time and cost. Reuse of software artifacts has emerged as a
potential approach to achieve the goal. A design pattern captures
high-quality design experience in a form that can be reused. Use of
design patterns often results in systems that are reliable, efficient,
scalable, and easy to maintain. However, prevalent design patterns are
described informally, which has been an obstacle to systematic use of
patterns. Systematic use of patterns can be achieved through tool
support. Such tool support requires patterns to be formalized. In this
talk, we present a systematic and practical approach to specifying
design patterns.
